Animal Welfare on Modern Farms
Not so long ago, farm animals were able to move around (0) FREELY (FREE) in open fields, in what we would now describe as 'free-range' conditions. However, as the rapidly expanding (1) (POPULATE) of the country put greater and greater pressure on the food supply, and as levels of food (2) (CONSUME) rose sharply, traditional methods could no longer keep up.
This situation led directly to the (3) (DEVELOP) of intensive factory farming, together with the introduction of genetically engineered (4) (GROW) hormones, both of which produced an enormous rise in output. Yet these techniques, combined with the routine drug (5) (TREAT) of livestock, have created a widespread belief that animals suffer greatly and that the food itself is of poorer quality.
Indeed, many consumers strongly (6) (AGREE) with such practices and have signed petitions demanding that they be banned outright. They argue that it is wrong to confine an animal indoors for its entire (7) (EXIST), and they insist that far more attention should be paid to (8) (ALTERNATE) methods of farming that avoid cruelty, rather than relying on intensive systems.
