Honestly, no. Plenty of people quietly trade money for something they value more, and I'd count myself among them. A friend of mine left a well paid job in finance to teach secondary school, and she's never once looked back, despite the drop in income. That said, having the luxury of choosing isn't universal, and when you're struggling to cover the rent, maximising your earnings stops being a preference and becomes simple arithmetic.
