  • 4 texts, 4 writers

This is Part 6 of Reading and Use of English: four short texts by different writers on the same topic, for example four reviews of one book. Then you answer four questions about their opinions.

The questions ask you to compare the writers: which one shares another's view on a point, or which one sees it differently from the others. You need each writer's position on every aspect of the topic, not just their general attitude.

Build a grid of opinions

As you read, note each writer's position on every point the questions mention, in two or three words: 'positive, long-term', 'doubts the benefits'. A small grid of writers and points makes the comparisons much quicker.

Unpack each question

Every question has a point and a relationship: shares a view, agrees with, differs from, or holds a different opinion from the others. Underline both. 'Which writer shares B's view on cost?' is only about cost, not about everything B thinks.

Start from the named writer

When a question names a writer, that writer can't be the answer. First pin down exactly what the named writer thinks about the point, then look for the one other writer who clearly agrees or clearly disagrees.

Opinion, not information

Two writers can mention the same fact and still disagree about it. Separate what writers report from what they think, and pay attention to attitude signals such as 'admittedly', 'there is little evidence that' or 'I remain unconvinced'.

Finding the odd one out

For a question about the writer who differs from the others, check all four on that point. The answer is the only writer whose view clashes with the other three, so if two seem different, one of them isn't really disagreeing.

Practise with real debates

Outside the exam, read texts where people disagree: opinion columns, several reviews of one film, readers' comments under an article. Practise summing up each view in one line; that's exactly the skill this part rewards.

Strategy

  1. 1Read the title and the line below it to understand the shared topic of the four texts.
  2. 2Read the four questions and underline the point and the relationship each one asks about.
  3. 3Read each text and note the writer's opinion on every point the questions mention.
  4. 4Answer from your notes, starting from the named writer's view whenever a question mentions one.
  5. 5Go back to the exact lines to confirm the writers really agree or disagree, not just mention the same thing.
  6. 6Check odd-one-out questions against all four writers before choosing.
