The C2 Proficiency exam and how to prepare for it

C2 Proficiency, once called the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), is the highest Cambridge English qualification, at level C2 of the CEFR. It shows that you have mastered English to an exceptional level: you understand almost everything you read or hear, and you can argue a point in fine detail, as academic and senior professional life demands.

The papers of C2 Proficiency and their parts

In the real exam, Reading & Use of English is one paper of 1 h 30 min. Writing takes 1 h 30 min, Listening about 40 min and Speaking about 16 min, usually with another candidate. Here every paper is split into its parts, so you can practise one task at a time.

How long is the C2 Proficiency exam?

Reading & Use of English takes 1 h 30 min, Writing 1 h 30 min and Listening about 40 min. Speaking takes about 16 min and is usually taken with another candidate, often on a different day.

What score do I need to pass C2 Proficiency?

C2 Proficiency is marked on the Cambridge English Scale, and you pass with a score of 200 or more. On C2 Academy every exam is scored out of 10, and 6 or more counts as a pass, so you can see how close you are.

How many C2 Proficiency practice exams are there?

There are 1,154: Use of English 313, Reading 213, Listening 88, Writing 300 and Speaking 240. Each one is a whole part of the exam.
